DSC01578.JPGSAC sponsors each year about 3500 children aged 6 – 18 at 90 different locations. Another 10.000 children benefit indirectly from this situation. First of all the children receive good quality primary- and secondary education. Secondly, they get access to food, healthcare and coaching. For the children who live in rural areas far away from the school, there are the opportunities to board in hostels.

Most children lack the opportunity to do their homework at home. The long waiting lists for admissions to schools and hostels reflect the interest in and need for education.

In the past more than 20.000 children got a chance to reach a better level of existence. Nurses, teachers, civil servants and computer specialists are among those who were educated with the support of SAC.

Besides sponsoring children, SAC supported more than 1.000 projects related to education. These include building schools and hostels, drilling wells, and building lavatories and walls around a hostel. But also educational tools, desks and beds have been provided.St.Francis school, Guma 2000.jpg

Before a new school in a rural area will prosper, many years have passed. SAC therefore emphasizes continuity in support.

A good example of continuing support is the St. Francis school in Guma.

Guma is situated about 35 miles from Kolkata (Calcutta). In the year 2000, Franciscan sisters started an English Medium school in a rickety and noisy construction with bamboo mats as walls. SAC members paid a visit the same year. Together with other NGO’s, SAC supported a variety of projects resulting in a solid construction which now accommodates 450 children. Today the school is a fully government approved training centre.

The most recent project supported by SAC was the final construction and furnishing of classrooms for biology, chemistry and physics. This was necessary for the realisation of the final examinations of the students of class 10 and for the full recognition of the school.

Only with this recognition the school receives the payment for the salaries of the teachers. The school enjoys an excellent reputation far and wide. The pictures give an impression of the development of St. Francis school over the years.
