P07-37: Steam cooking installation for a Boys’ Hostel at Allada, Orissa.

Required budget: € 4.090,-.

A steam cooking installation can reduce the need for firewood by more than half compared with the usual way of cooking. This means lower costs for the management of the hostel, but this also contributes towards the preservation of the forests and woods.St.Francis school, Guma 2000.jpg

The hostel accommodates 140 boys. They have 2 warm meals a day with rice as their staple food. Up till now the rice is cooked in big kettles on an open stove with firewood. This is very inefficient, but also costly, as firewood is becoming increasingly more expensive due to deforestation. The use of steam boilers with a special furnace reduces the amount firewood that is required by more than half. Furthermore, it is possible to cook 2 meals at the same time. This delivers a great advantage for the management of the hostel but it also helps reducing deforestation, which is a great threat to the environment.
Many more hostels are open for the idea of steam cooking installations, but because of shortages of funds for the investments of the installations they continue cooking in the usual way. SAC welcomes very much any gifts for other hostels.
