FR11: Support for the Shanti Bhavan Girls’ Hostel, Orissa.
This budget is sufficient for the costs of accommodation of 50 girls during one year. Practically no schools are available in many small villages in the rural areas of Orissa. For their formal education the only option for the children is to board in a hostel with a school close by. Most parents cannot pay the necessary fees due to their poverty.
Required budget: € 2000
SAC operates mainly in rural areas with widespread small villages. The surrounding of Rangiam is such an area. The people belong mainly to an indigenous tribe. Their income is less than € 1, - per day from the labour on the fields of the landlords or from the produce of the forests.
There might be a Balwadi (Kindergarten) in a few villages, but a formal school is not available. Children therefore remain deprived of further education. The literacy rate of the people is very low, especially of the women, which may be less than 10%.
SAC believes that education, especially of girls, is the key to sustainable development of the society.
Children need to board in hostels that are located near proper schools, because of the absence of schools in the villages.
However, because of their poverty the parents cannot afford to send their children to a hostel for their education, and if they can they give preference to sons above the daughters. But if funds are available for girls to board in a hostel, then parents are very much willing to send their daughter to school. So a number of girls have already joined the Girls’ Hostel in Rangiam or other similar hostels elsewhere through the support of SAC, but many girls still cannot be accommodated due to lack of funds. Your gift for Rangiam will be very much appreciated.
