AB01: Balwadi program in 14 villages in district Dumka, Jharkhand

Required budget per year: € 5.600  (€ 400 per village).

thermo The program supports the education of the poorest of the poor children in 14 villages who cannot go to school. The goal is to facilitate their enrolment in the formal schools. These Balwadi Homes work also as a catalyst for the integrated development of the village communities. SAC has initialised this project but is in need of further funds for continuation.

SAC has its programs in rural areas with many widespread small villages. For the children, especially the little ones, there are no schools within walking distance. Therefore the children have to board in a hostel for their education. For the little ones this is troublesome, because they will miss their parental care and daily attention. The bigger children can either walk larger distances to school or are less troubled by staying away from their parents
Balwadi means “Kindergarten”, literally “garden school”. The idea is to teach the little children the official language as spoken in formal schools by means of songs, dances, plays, drawings and self made materials. This is needed as in the villages the people speak a completely different language. The children also learn the alphabet, numbers, and concepts like under, above, left or right etc. The children get used to a structured life by regular attendance, which is very important for their future development.
The children come together in a simple shed, a veranda of a house or under a tree. The teacher is usually a young lady from the village itself or a neighbouring one, who speaks the language of the village and has had a special training. A village committee has the supervision of the Balwadi. An animator visits the Balwadis regularly and checks on the proper management.
The Balwadis are of great importance for the children and the integrated development of the villages.
